Whitley VINELink Custody Coverage
VINELink is the public interface for Kentucky VINE. The free service receives information from jail booking systems, state prisons, mental-health facilities, and juvenile detention facilities. It can report custody or status and register notices for release, county-jail transfer, escape, and an upcoming parole hearing. It does not replace a jail release record, court order, or DOC discharge record.
For Whitley County, VINE is especially useful when someone disappears from the live detention center roster. That absence does not reveal whether the person returned to the community or transferred. The VINE result can point toward the next check. A local entry concerns the county stream. A DOC entry concerns state custody. Federal Bureau of Prisons and ICE custody are outside this Kentucky VINE path.
Search One Whitley Inmate on VINELink
Use a partial name when spelling is uncertain, but do not select a record on name alone. The official Kentucky VINE FAQ explains the search and notification path. An offender ID or DOC number is the best way to separate similar names. Compare the named facility and the record type before relying on the displayed status.
- Open VINELink and select Kentucky.
- Choose “Find an Offender.”
- Enter part of the name or the jail or DOC offender ID.
- Compare identity details and facility for each match.
- Open the correct record and read its current custody or status text.
- If local and DOC records both appear, inspect both entries.
- Confirm an important result with the detention center, KOOL, or court.
The live Whitley portal at getinmate.info/whk is a current-custody starting point. It is not a verified released-person archive. KOOL at Kentucky Offender Online Lookup can show incarcerated, supervised, and some released or discharged people. These sources complement VINE instead of duplicating it.
Whitley VINELink Release Fields
Read only what the live result states. Kentucky's official material supports custody or status reporting and release notifications, but it does not promise that every released profile remains searchable forever or uses one permanent phrase. Record the access date, the source entry, the named agency, and the exact displayed status.

A still-in-custody person may remain on the Whitley roster or appear at a state institution in KOOL. A released county detainee can drop from the live roster. A state prisoner may continue in KOOL under supervision or discharged status. VINE bridges the change with alerts, but the official release record provides documentary proof.
Note: Save the entry type and access time because local-jail and state-DOC records may update on different schedules.
Register Whitley Release Notifications
Register only after choosing the right entry. When both county and DOC streams matter, Kentucky instructs users to register on both. This guards against a county-to-state transfer being mistaken for community release. Telephone registration uses a four-digit PIN so the recipient can acknowledge the automated call.
- Open the correct person record and select “Notify Me of Status Changes.”
- Add the desired phone number and/or email through the prompts.
- Create a four-digit PIN for telephone delivery.
- Complete all confirmation prompts for that entry.
- Repeat the process for a second local or DOC entry when both apply.
- When a call arrives, enter the PIN to acknowledge the notice.
- Verify the event with the holding agency before treating it as final.
If a call is not acknowledged, VINE may leave a message and retry during a 24-hour period. Alerts can arrive at any hour. A switchboard is a poor registration number because the automated call must reach someone able to enter the PIN. Kentucky VINE can also be reached at 1-800-511-1670. Duplicate Whitley VINE Records Explained
Kentucky's official FAQ says duplicate VINE entries can represent the local-jail record and the DOC record for the same person. In Whitley, that distinction is central. A person can leave the county detention center because of transfer into Kentucky state custody. The county entry changes, while the DOC entry continues. That is not duplicate noise and should not be collapsed into one assumed release.
Kentucky's VINE history traces the original system to Jefferson County after Mary Byron's 1993 murder and statewide DOC implementation beginning in 1996. The history explains why notification is the service's core purpose. It was designed to alert, not to serve as a permanent historical release database.
Search both names and IDs where possible. Match the facility and agency. If the local entry changes but KOOL shows state incarceration, the event was likely a transfer rather than a return to the community. Obtain the jail movement record when the exact destination matters.
A second entry may also carry a different status-change option. Review the available event choices on each record instead of assuming one registration covers both agencies. Save each confirmation separately. If a county alert arrives first, check KOOL before concluding that state custody ended.
When spelling or identifiers differ, do not merge records based on a photograph or similar name. Ask the jail for the booking number and movement destination, then match the DOC number in KOOL. This creates a documented bridge between local custody and the state record.
Verify Whitley VINELink Alerts
Kentucky DOC's current VINE information page documents false release notifications caused by a vendor on February 3, 2026. The agency published corrective information and outreach. That event gives a concrete reason to treat VINE as an alarm that starts a verification check, not a certified release record.
For a Whitley jail event, call the Whitley County Detention Center at 606-549-6013 and request the release or movement record. Check the court order for legal authority. Whitley Registries Are Separate
The Kentucky State Police Sex Offender Registry is a distinct post-release source for people subject to KRS Chapter 17 registration. It is not part of the jail release proof. It does not cover every offense, and it cannot establish the date someone left Whitley custody. Use it only when the person is subject to that separate legal registration system.
Likewise, parole-hearing notices and actual release are different events. A hearing may be scheduled without a grant, and a grant may precede physical departure. Check the Parole Board record, KOOL, and the holding agency. Each answers a separate question.
A federal release must be checked through the Bureau of Prisons locator, while a recent ICE result belongs in the ICE locator. Neither result should be folded into Kentucky VINE. If Whitley released a person to another authority, request the movement destination because the county event may mark transfer rather than freedom from all custody.
A court order can explain legal authority, but another hold may delay departure. Keep an alert log with the time received, person identifier, entry type, stated event, and verification source. This identifies whether a notice came from the county or DOC stream and whether the agency confirmed it.
